Background
Gathering and distribution of information are key functions for rights advocates as they witness violations, identify injustice and expose misconduct. Although advocacy organisations are constantly inventing new ways to communicate and add weight to their messages, it is a few who successfully reach their audiences or achieve their targets of change. Governments, corporations and mainstream media prove tough opposition for those with less power and resources in the information space. Rights advocates thus need to find artful ways to increase the power of their information and leverage available resources to create maximum impact.
The Info-Activism camp is a means to achieve that end. The camp seeked to raise awareness of the possibilities available in information, communication and digital technologies for advocates working at grass-root levels. It inspired advocates by showcasing examples, helping them find the right solutions to meet their needs, connecting them with others facing similar challenges and with complementary skill sets, and building their skill-base.
Tactical Tech's agenda is triggered by a deep desire to promote the use of Info-Activism in advocacy. It is our constant endeavour to research information, communication and digital technologies in order to unearth novel techniques and tactics to support advocates' efforts in their campaigns.
